The Story of Birmingham’s Villages

In 1857, surveyor Charles Blood produced an extraordinary, detailed map of Birmingham and its surroundings. It shows rural villages like Northfield, Kings Norton, Yardley and Aston and hamlets like Selly Oak and Kings Heath lying in open countryside.

Within 60 years of Blood’s map these areas had been swallowed up by Birmingham: it therefore provides a unique opportunity to explore an historic landscape and shed some light on the lives of the people who lived here more than a century and a half ago.

This is the fascinating story of where we live.
